France Takes Early Lottery Lead

The first month of 2014 has come and gone, and it has given France an early lead in the competition to see which nation will enjoy the most EuroMillions jackpot wins before the year ends. There have been just two jackpots landed so far. The first took place on Tuesday 7th January, when two tickets shared a jackpot worth €130 / £108 million. Those tickets had been purchased in France and Spain, so when the €72 / £59 million jackpot on Friday 31st January was also landed by a ticket entered by a French player, it gave the nation a clear advantage.

Of course, two January wins versus one in Spain doesn’t give France an unassailable lead by any means, and it could well be the case that the most successful jackpot-winning nation of 2014 hasn’t yet got off the starting blocks. That said, the early success of French tickets will no doubt inspire plenty of players in France to take the EuroMillions game a little more seriously than they might have previously. Whether that likely swell in popularity leads to more French winners – which would be something of a self-fulfilling prophecy – remains to be seen.

No nation has any real advantage over any other as far as individual tickets are concerned. Whilst it can be argued that countries which purchase more tickets have a greater chance of winning a jackpot, any set of numbers entered for a draw has exactly the same mathematical chance as any other set. It is therefore perfectly possible for a jackpot to be landed by a player in a nation with a relatively low participation rate.

The EuroMillions game was launched in 2004 by lottery organisations in France, Spain and the UK, so it is interesting to see that two of those three founding nations already have something to celebrate as far as 2014 jackpot wins are concerned. Players in the UK will be keen to add one of their own to the leader board to balance things out, but players in other countries will be just as keen to see the top prizes go their way instead.

With the last EuroMillions game of January delivering its jackpot in such convincing style, the next game this Tuesday 4th February will boast a brand new jackpot of €15 / £12 million. We look forward to seeing what happens and we will bring you our usual round-up of the results on Wednesday.
