Despite its widespread reputation for being a harbinger of bad luck, Sterling’s first big win came on the notoriously unlucky day of Friday 13th. The mystery player secured a US$1 million second tier prize in the Mega Millions drawing after matching all five main numbers drawn. The lucky ticket holder was the only person across 43 participating states to win a second place prize and, had they matched the Mega Ball, would have shared the US$66 million top prize with the jackpot winner from Michigan.
The winning numbers from the Mega Millions draw on Friday 13th were 7, 38, 46, 49 and 56 with the Mega Ball 1. The lucky ticket was purchased at the 7-Eleven on 46141 Woodshire Drive, Sterling.
Just eight days later a second Sterlonian achieved a similar feat in the Powerball drawing held on Saturday June 21st. The player matched the first five numbers drawn and missed only the Powerball to secure themselves a second place prize of US$1 million.
The winning Powerball ticket was bought at Getty Mart on 209 East Holly Avenue, Sterling and matched the main numbers 5, 6, 37, 41 and 54 but missed the Powerball number 26.
Although neither winner has yet come forward to claim their prize, there’s no rush as the lucky pair still have almost six months to collect their win. Each prize has a claim period of 180 days so will not expire until December.
